Blog Fright

Congratulations my friend!!! You just wrote a brilliant post! It's funny, creative, and well received. Your friends and fellow bloggers rave about it. Your post gets re-Tweeted multiple times, and you proudly congratulate yourself for being awesome. You're on top of the world it seems. Invincible! Nothing can stop you now. But wait! Don't celebrate too soon! You set the congratulatory donut down and pick up a paper bag to breathe into (or vomit in).

You re-read your plentiful comments and pure panic sets in. Comments like, "I can't wait to read more". Oh dear God, they expect me to write more? Panic turns to terror. What in the hell am I going to write about this time? What if it sucks? What if i'm a one blog wonder?

You quickly rack your brain for new ideas. Let's see, what's happened to me lately?

I was late dropping off the kids again…boring.

I spent the morning plucking grey hairs out of my head and crying…pathetic.

My youngest kid just said "dammit" again...but i've already blogged about my children's foul mouths.

That's it you think. I'm done, finished, over! You bang your head against the desk and begin to contemplate other options. "Perhaps i'll start one of those giveaway blogs", you think to yourself. Desperation has set in and you'll do anything at this point to keep on blogging!

You completely avoid your computer like the plague, which is funny because your computer has actually been infected with a virus. It's called blog fright and don't worry, it happens to the best of us! Nothing is scarier than blog fright. It's as if it takes over your mind and sucks out any and all creativity. You can't even think about writing, and if you are brave enough to try and write something you re-read your post and think, "Wow, this blows. My 4 year old could've done better than this".

So how do you combat blog fright? You drink. No, not really, but hey if it helps you, then by all means go for it! I actually choose to embrace my blog fright head on. I put on my comfiest pajamas (okay, so I do that regardless) and I avoid the computer. I don't even think about blogging for a while. Instead I find other ways to occupy my time. I chat with friends on Twitter. I re-Tweet my brilliant post a few more times just in case it really does happen to be my last good post. I read other blogs and complement my friends on their brilliant posts. I catch up on missed television shows, and if my hubby is really lucky, I even throw a load of his socks into the wash, as I caught him digging through the dirty hamper the last few mornings and grumbling about having to wear smelly socks to work.

The next time you write a brilliant post, or even if it's not brilliant but just a post that you're really proud of, enjoy it! Don't allow those feelings of blog fright to creep in and ruin your moment. Enjoy your 15 minutes of bloggy fame. You earned it! Blogging is so difficult sometimes. You don't have anyone telling you what to do, or how to do it. It's all on you, and you can either fold under pressure, or use that pressure to just push yourself further. You can't be brilliant all the time, and sometimes you're going to fail. But so what? Who cares? No one is going to judge you. Okay so some will, but they don't count. Your friends, fans, and fellow bloggers will still be there for you, cheering you on, through good posts, and bad (like this one for example).

  1. I love this post! Sometimes I feel like if I don't have an awesome craft to share or a cute pic of my daughter then I shouldn't blog. I just did a random blog post tonight and even though no one will probably comment on it, it was good for me to get it out there because it makes my head less crowded with my own thoughts. Just say no to blog fright. :)

  2. Very true...and I have YET to have that fame lmao...I have a handful of followers which are my gals and no one else...my posts don't get retweeted yet so I'm still figuring out what I should or should not write....sometimes I feel like I shouldn't write at all or I don't make any sense at all >.< ugh

All I know is that I love just love my twitter friends and I'm gonna try to continue writing but when I actually sit down...I'm scared of writing....ack! thanks for the post sweetie! I'm glad I'm not alone! love yah xoxo

  3. This is so so relatable. I always keep a few posts "on reserve" just in case I get crazy writer's block and really need them. Kind of like keeping a couple frozen meals available for days when cooking is out of the question. BTW, when I read your line about putting on your "comfiest pajamas", I thought it said your "confident pajamas" at first and I was thinking, "that's so interesting that she has 'confident pajamas'!"

  4. Wow! You are definitely on point. I swear I have Blog Fright ever so often, at least once a week, but I only post once a week. Hmm... I think it's more difficult to write a lifestyle blog because it serves only the purpose of entertainment, therefore you constantly feel the pressure. At least I do. Oh well, I like this post and can totally relate. Lifestyle Bloggers Uniting Against Blog Fright-One Post at a Time!

  5. You really make it look so easy. This post is very encouraging to someone who is just beginning to promote a blog. I appreciate your candor!

  6. I feel like this all the time... It is nice to know others feel the same.. But it seems like the ones that are about the crappiest thing someone can write are my most viewed. I am now, as you know, at blog fright I have something good to say and I've written 4 times and just couldn't press publish. The subject means so much to me it just feels like words are not enough and I guarantee most moms can relate, I know you can... Sometimes blogging is just hard...

  7. What a brilliant post; I'll be expecting *more* LOL! I guess many bloggers do have blog fright now and then; perhaps the key really is to just relax and have fun, doing it when you can, the best you can.

  8. Oh please, you're not fooling me. You're NEVER at a loss for words. I joined your blog, I followed you on twitter, I liked you on FB. I may be a stalker but I know this. You're still at it when I go to bed, you're still at it when I get up in the morning. You are the Queen of Words!

  9. YES. Even my super-favorite blogs post duds now and then, but honestly, I'd rather read that than nothing.

Sometimes, I'll bang out something that I think is terrible, just so I post SOMETHING, and I'll get comments that it's awesome.

And for real, I would like to read about you plucking and crying.

  11. We must be on the same page because I just blogged about writer's block (well, actually all my excuses for procrastination). Hey, at least you're posting frequently--I can only crank out a new post every two weeks--too many distractions... and again, the procrastination excuses....I get too easily sucked in by the teenagers' squeals when they're watching stupid reality TV....or stalking friends on Facebook....or checking Pinterest boards....you'd never know I didn't even know how to use a computer a year ago...the hubs had no idea what he was getting himself into when he dragged me kicking and screaming to my first computer class!
Funny blog post here and certainly something we can all relate to!

  12. Oh I know what you mean. As you know I am going to try to do the 31 days of...... challange and I'm a little scared. I still haven't decided on a topic yet, but I'm thinking that it will be fall preschool activities. I think I am going to brainstorm topics to make sure I have enough.

  13. I love this post! I get blog fright quite a bit lately and I need to start remembering to just let go, RELAX, and then the really good posts will show up in their own time. :)

  14. Blog-fright only happens to reality-based bloggers. Never limit yourself to real life. Make stuff up or pontificate if you feel like it.

  15. This happens to me all of the time too. I do the same thing you do when it happens...I step away from all things blog and wash socks. Sometimes you have to live your life so you have something to write about...even if it is just socks! I love the idea of a one blog wonder. I have thought that so many times...haha! The best thing about blogging is finding out you are never alone. Someone else always feels the same way.

  16. blog-fright. I am glad there is a name for it.
    Thanks for sharing :)

  17. Girl, this is how blogging gets you. It gets you addicted to the high of all the attention and praise but that doesn't stay around for long. Then you gotta create and create, you ignore your life and your children all to get that high once again.

Yeah... I have no idea what you are talking about.

  18. oh man! totally get blog fright. I leave my posts in "draft" for days to re-edit them because I think they are just not interesting enough, or funny enough, or well something that someone might want to read. And I wonder about all those blogs out there with 1000+ followers ... how did so many people find their blogs? and then I stop by some of the fashion bloggers and the comments are literally *kisses* ... really? so I slave over a post and someone drops by with the equivalent of a '3-kiss' hello and goodbye? just shoot me now

  19. I feel this way ALL. THE. TIME. Sometimes, I'm so excited about a post, but then I feel like I have nothing interesting to write after such a "fabulous" post. I think the worst though, is when I think I've got a really stellar post...and then I don't even get a comment from my RL best friend (which is a ridiculous concern because she loved me when I had bangs and a whole lot more awkward moments).

  20. We all feel like that. What to talk about next lol. Great blog!
